Japan is known all over the world for its crazy and innovative ideas: from robothotels to the countless crane game parlors that you can find in places like: Akihabara, Shibuya and many more places. But there is 1 concept / activity that you can do in Japan that takes the crown for most absurd / cool activity: and that would be nothing less than going to a maid cafe.
Japan has found the perfect formula for groups of people and for old men: a cafe where you can buy cute drinks and food items while there is loud music playing while being served by cute girls in a maid cafe: what more is there to ask from a country, if you ask me: nothing. A maid cafe might be the peak of perfection that has ever been created by mankind in its entire history. Forget telephones, wheels, wifi, and cars: those are mere 8-grade school projects compared to the perfection that is a maid cafe.

Let me explain what a maid cafe is before I tell you about all the greatness that comes with it: a maid cafe is essentially a cafe where they serve drinks and food items that look cute and where the waitresses are dressed in cute maid outfits. This in itself already sounds like perfection, but oh believe me: it gets better. During your visit you can give yourself a name that the maids will use to call you, this can be anything from little brother to starlord420, this adds a whole new level to the maid cafe as it gives you the feeling that you are actually important. The cafe itself also has a cute interior with bright pink and purple lights and decorated menu cards, tables, chairs etc.
It is the combination of all this greatness that makes a maid cafe a maid cafe. Maid cafes basically give you the idea / illusion that you are the master of cute maids and that you pull the strings in the cafe, but do not be deceived by the cute maids: while you are living out your fantasie they are charging you an extremely high amount of money.
The way the maids ‘lure’ you in is by sending 1 maid to go stand outside of the store at the door that will act cute and give you flyers about the maid cafe, they will also talk to you and with that you are already one step closer to being lured into the so called paradise for old men and groups of young adults. This is an (proven) effective way of luring in customers since the cafe was almost full when we went.

Now the big question is: what do you even do in a maid cafe?!?
Let me explain that very clearly from my own experience:
So basically, when you walk in with your colleagues who you just had serious meetings with over the future of the company you are immediately greeted by a maid who will offer you a variety of choices you can make: unlimited drinks, cute outfits and many more.
After you have taken your seat you are greeted by all the maids who all talk like they are the stars in a tv show for 4 year-old girls, after the greeting you will tell them the name you like to be associated with (as mentioned above) and they will then give you the menu. After you make your choice and they brought the food out they will draw cute pictures with sauce on your food to make it cute and they will cast a so-called spell on your food to get rid of the ‘evil’ within your food (how there is any evil in an omurice is beyond me) but that is what you willingly signed up for at this point.
After the spell you get to eat your food while the maids constantly interact with you and talk with you about anything they think you like to give you the feeling they actually like you.

Is there more than food and maids?
Yes, (as mentioned above) the maids will constantly interact with you and they will do dances with the whole crew to make sure you are being entertained the whole time. There was this one thing that happened where I couldn’t believe my eyes: there was this middle-aged man who ordered 1 bottle of champagne (this was 1 of those fancy champagnes with lights and stuff) and the whole crew started dancing around this man and started to take pictures and scream and stuff.
At that moment all I could think was: ‘why in the world did this man go to a maid cafe alone and order a bottle of champagne for himself’ but it was really funny as the man was pretty awkward due to all the maids being around him what was funny to see.
Is it worth it?
At the end of the day it is just a decorated cafe with maids walking around, but they do such a good job where it actually becomes really fun to do with your friends. My advice is to do it 1 time when you are in Japan, because it will cost you multiple fortunes to go to one but it is worth it if it is your first time.
