Convenience stores in Japan, such as 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Lawson, are known for offering a wide variety of ready-to-eat food items, including fried chicken. These stores have taken the traditional fast food staple and transformed it into a popular and convenient option for Japanese consumers on the go. One of the most popular fried chicken options at convenience stores in Japan is karaage, a Japanese-style fried chicken made with bite-sized pieces of chicken that are marinated in a blend of soy sauce, ginger, and other seasonings before being coated in flour and deep-fried. The result is a crispy, flavorful, and juicy chicken that can be enjoyed as a snack or as a meal.
7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Lawson all offer their own versions of karaage. 7-Eleven’s karaage is known for its large size and crispy coating, while FamilyMart’s karaage is praised for its juicy and tender meat. Lawson’s karaage on the other hand is popular for its crisp and flavorful coating .These varieties of Karaage are available as a single piece or in a set with rice and side dishes.

In addition to karaage, these convenience stores also offer other types of fried chicken. 7-Eleven, for example, offers a spicy version of karaage, while FamilyMart offers a variety of flavors including garlic butter and lemon pepper. Lawson also has a special version of karaage called “Karaage-kun” which is a bite-sized karaage that is perfect for snacking on the go.
Another popular option at convenience stores in Japan is fried chicken wings. These wings are often coated in a spicy or savory seasoning, and are a popular option for those looking for a more substantial snack or meal. In addition to the taste, another reason why these convenience store fried chicken is so popular is the packaging. These stores have taken great care to package their fried chicken in a way that keeps it warm and fresh for as long as possible. Personally, my favorite is the FamilyMart chicken, however I usually get the Lawson chicken because I think that Lawson is the best convenience store out of the 3 in general. The fact that you can get fried chicken 24/7 everywhere in Japan is amazing. I really think that other countries should introduce something like this because it is both extremely tasty and very convenient. It is also one of Japan’s most underrated food items and is something I will sincerely miss when I return home.
